As we start to get into the swing of getting things ready for Xmas here are just a few things to remember to help keep your dog safe this Xmas.
Keep food away and out of reach
Keep chocolate away and out of reach. Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is toxic to dogs. The chemical is much higher in dark chocolate than in white chocolate. Keep advent calendars / chocolate on the tree and under the tree well away.
Sultanas, raisins, and grapes are toxic and there’s lots of Christmassy foods with them in, Christmas cake, minced pies, Xmas pudding to name just a few.
Don’t be tempted to leave bones and carcasses around. Ensure they are well disposed of! They can cause blockages and pose a choking hazard.
Xylitol is seen in sugar free products and items that are low sugar. It can cause a sudden and dangerous drop in blood sugar in dogs.
No onion gravy! Onions and leeks are also toxic apart from giving them a bad belly they also cause anaemia by damaging the red blood cells.
Watch the booze!
Alcohol is also severely dangerous to dogs. In some cases it can even cause seizures and comas!
Christmas plants to keep out of the way
A few of the typical xmas plants to keep out of the way including Holly, mistletoe, Ivy and poinsettia.
Christmas trees and decorations along with fairy light and other electrical wires also pose potential risks if you have a destructive dog.
Curiosity is natural for dogs however if you do find your dog is prone to stealing, shows, destruction behaviours or counter surfing it’s important for their safety to identify the cause and adding in some appropriate training. That’s where we can help! Feel free to contact us to book in.
